An initiative by Impact One
Collection
Working in the Web3 space, the Possible Futures platform aims to empower indigenous communities with direct and transparent sources of revenue, and boost nature-positive initiatives in the Amazon region from afar. The goal is to develop regenerative business models using blockchain technology to support indigenous communities’ stewardship of their lands, and by extension, the protection of some of the planet's most vital ecosystems.
Coming together in a historical collaboration, the Brazilian Indigenous Yawanawa community, Refik Anadol and Impact One launched the co-created digital artworks series Winds of Yawanawa in July 2023, in partnership with Scorpios.
Winds of Yawanawa is composed of an nft collection of 1000 unique Data Paintings, and an edition of 3 data sculptures, that harness weather data from the community’s village in the Amazon rainforest including wind speed, gusts, direction and temperature. This data is used to activate drawings by young Yawanawa artists, resulting in a mesmerizing play of traditional shapes and colors through data pigmentation. The Winds of Yawanawa collection brings the nuances of Yawanawa art to the digital world with the aim of preserving their rich culture.

Each piece draws inspiration from one of the 9 origins defined by Chief Nixiwaka Yawanawa:

Vari - Sun             Waka - Water             MAI - EARTH
Ushe - Moon            NII - FOREST             TXII - FIRE
IshtI - Star           Niwe - Wind              Nay - Sky

NFT DROP
About the Artwork
Each Data Painting NFT is composed of a unique video with soundtrack, generated from the Winds of Yawanawa artwork video. Central to the creative process of the works are the Yawanawa sisters Nawashahu and Mukashahu, whose drawings form the visual foundation of Winds of Yawanawa; while the artwork's soundtrack is based on traditional Yawanawa chants.
In parallel to the expressions of Yawanawa culture, the artworks’ movements and composition are dictated by data displaying the weather patterns surrounding the Yawanawa sacred village of Aldeia Sagrada. The information flows into Refik Anadol's algorithms, to turn the pieces into representations of the deep-rooted relationship between the community and the forest.
Real-time weather data from Aldeia Sagrada will continue to flow into the central Winds of Yawanawa artwork and dictate its movement, making it a living and dynamically evolving illustration of the Yawanawa identity and the community’s connection to their Amazonian land, which is a fundamental ecosystem for all of humanity.
Proceeds Distribution and Use
This first Possible Futures NFT collection launch introduces the Yawanawa community into the Web3 space through customised smart contracting pathways, as a first step in the building of a safe and decentralised flow of income directly into the hands of the community, whilst simultaneously establishing a direct, live connection between the Web3 space and the Amazon rainforest.

With the launch of Winds of Yawanawa, we are planting the seeds for a more integrative approach to sustainability in the future. Proceeds of the artwork collection sale will go directly to the Yawanawa community.
